The story I always tell about Patrick is really about his endless creativity and boundless imagination. At UCSF, grad students had to present papers from the literature to an audience of their peers and faculty at journal clubs. People really poured their efforts into these things, making fancy overheads (pre-Powerpoint) and laboring over the perfect, funny title for the talk.
Patrick gave a journal club about the neuroscience behind the sensation of itch. He went up to give the talk, turned around to face the screen, and we all gasped and laughed and immediately felt itchy because he had shaved the word ITCH into his hair.
Above and beyond, always.
